NEW YORK CITY— New Books Published Featuring Jelly Associates' Type Collection

The typographic endeavours of Jelly Associates' partner Amy Unikewicz are featured in two recently published books, "Speck: A Curious Collection of Uncommon Things" (Princeton Architectural Press) and "Typography 22: The Annual of the Type Directors Club" (Hearst Books International). The celebrated work is actually a collection of rusted, bent, broken and discarded objects, found on the sidewalks and streets of New York City, which remarkably resemble typographic letterforms. Previously, the objects have been displayed in galleries at The New York Art Directors' Club and the School of Visual Arts. Presently, Amy's collection resides, carefully arranged, in an unspecified flat file drawer at Jelly Associates' headquarters.

In "Speck," author Peter Buchanan-Smith asks artists, designers, lawyers, writers, collectors, and photographers to explore our obsessions with the small objects that loom large in our everyday lives, such as pocketbooks, manhole covers and high school yearbooks. The object letterforms are presented as a complete alphabet. The book also considers our assumptions about the commonplace and our understanding of design.

The Type Directors Club's "Typography 22" is a collection of the best of type and typography from 2001. An international organization founded in 1946 whose members include design professionals, typographic designers, and typophiles, TDC asks a different designer to design the Annual each year. This year's Annual was designed by "Rolling Stone" magazine's art director, Gail Anderson, worked with Amy to create title pages and initial caps utilizing letters from the object collection.

Both hardcover editions will be widely-available in bookstores and online by early 2002.
